Community Outreach is proud to present Paper Machete (42¾ 59' N / 81¾ 14' W), a Carousel magazine special project, featuring: Dearraindrop, Mark DeLong, Jesse Harris, Jeff Ladouceur, Mark Laliberte, Jason McLean, Chantal Rousseau and Daryl Vocat.
Carousel is a hybrid literary & arts magazine featuring new works from both emerging & established artists. From cover to cover, this innovative and beautifully designed journal acts as a venue for global & Canadian creators interested in exploring the page.
The Paper Machete Exhibition Series expands on the culture that Carousel proposes to study with every new issue. These shows bring together groups of artists, who have, through their practice and aesthetic, strongly connected to the community developing around Carousel.
For this London, ON showing, we focus on the following eight amazing artists:
Dearraindrop is Joe Grillo, Laura Grant and Billy Grant, three artists who collaborate on paintings, clothing, animation, installations, and videos. They have had solo shows at Deitch Projects and John Connelly Presents in NY, and HaNNa in Tokyo, Japan.
Mark DeLong (b. 1978) is a self-taught artist working in sculpture, video, and painting. He lives and works in Vancouver.
Jesse Harris is a print-based art-instigator who employs letterpress and text based methods of production to reflect the era of bygone job-printing. Harris recently participated in the first Carousel Paper Machete exhibition (in Windsor), and the 3-person Shangri-Lost at LE-Gallery, Toronto.
Jeff Ladouceur (b. 1975) is a self-taught artist currently living in New York, working primarily in the medium of drawing. He has had solo exhibits in New York, Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. Ladouceur has two books of his work available, Ebola (2001) and Schmo (2005), both published by L'Oie de Cravan.Mark Laliberte (b.1971) is a project-based hybrid media artist currently working in collage, curation, video, animation, language, and computer-based sound composition. Laliberte's gallery works have been shown throughout Canada and the USA. He is a founding member of Thinkbox, a new media collective with recent exhibitions at the Art Gallery of Windsor and the Thames Art Gallery. Laliberte is the Managing Editor and Designer of Carousel magazine.|
Jason McLean (b. 1971) lives and works in Vancouver. His work has been featured in BorderCrossings, Modern Painters, I.D.N., Flash Art and in the comic/fine art book Nod A Dod. He is represented by Perugi Art Contemporary (Italy), Richard Heller Gallery (LA), Tracey Lawrence Gallery (Vancouver).
Chantal Rousseau lives and works in Toronto. She is a cross disciplinary artist whose practice includes painting, drawing, video and animation. Rousseau has exhibited in various artist-run centres including: La Centrale, Montréal (2002), Mercer Union, Toronto (2002), Latitude 53, Edmonton (2001). She is a member of the Persona Volare collective, whose recent exhibitions include "Canadian Club" at the Canadian Cultural Centre in Paris (2005).
Daryl Vocat is a visual artist/screen printer living and working in Toronto. He recently exhibited his newest body of work at Thrush Holmes Empire, Toronto, with previous exhibitions including solo shows at The Wilfred Laurier Gallery in Waterloo, ON, and Malaspina Printmakers Gallery in Vancouver. Community Outreach was founded by the desire to expand the variety of art and culture on view in London Ontario. The upcoming years will prove to be an exciting time for London's art community and we are looking forward to contributing.
An opening reception for the Paper Machete (42¾ 59' N / 81¾ 14' W) show will be held on July 14th with select artists in attendance; the evening will also serve as a launch party for the newest issue of the magazine, Carousel 21.
