WINDSOR Carousel 20 launch event:

Carousel's Paper Machete Art Residency + Exhibit
November 09 - 21, 2006 @ Common Ground - 3277 Sandwich St W, Windsor
Opening reception for exhibit + Carousel 20 launch party: Saturday Nov 11

Featuring:
Jesse Harris (Guelph), Shawn Kuruneru (Montreal), Mark Laliberte (Toronto), gustave morin (Windsor), Ali Sunderji (Toronto)

This group of artists, brought together for Paper Machete, share a history in zine & artist book culture, and a fascination with aging paper & material scavenging. Most of the work displayed at the Common Ground gallery space was created in a three-day period out of primarily found materials. Through the time-sensitive and process-oriented context that this residency provided, the group collectively explored their interests in hybrid lit, drawing, and collage in various forms to create a playful & diverse collection of objects, images and ideas.

For the Paper Machete residency, Carousel-related artists first gathered at Common Ground on Thursday morning (Nov 09), and spent the following two days together haunting the gallery... decorating the walls with countless collages, exploring the limits of paper, listening to music, and having fun in the name of art. Throughout the time, invited local guests were free to stop by to participate & collaborate... and the exhibition opened publicly on Saturday Nov 11, when the installation was declared complete and where the newest issue of Carousel was launched to the Windsor area.

Works by various artists can be seen in this overview of the exhibition.... everyone was very excited about Common Ground's wacky floor!

: : : : (L) Mark Laliberte created a diverse series of works for the show that included photos, collage, and sculpture... here we can see a wooden fox silhuette jumping off a fence which was created by stringing together a bunch of found handles rescued earlier in the day from an abandoned building in Detroit (much of the materials used by all the artists in this exhibit were scavenged in this manner).

: : : :  (L) another Laliberte work is detailed here, made from a book, foam letters and a plastic gothic frame; also seen, a flourescent 35mm slide.

: : : : (L) over the few days spent rummaging through the Windsor and Detroit second-hand shops, we've managed to amass a sizable collection of owl ephemera. Ali Sunderji nested all this stuff together in one zone of the gallery, and combined it with found nature imagery and cheap frames to create this work... he was going to met the candle works down at the opening, but decided he kind of liked these strange wax owls a bit too much to part with so quickly.

: : : : (above, L) Jesse Harris created a series of clustered works that included process photos, collage, text pieces, ink, and a large perspective-work created using coloured tapes.

: : : (above, R) Harris can be seen beginning to install 'The Show Must Gone' directly on the wall while Sunderji watches on.

: : : : (L) overview of the collaborative collage wall, initially lead by the quick paper gestures of gustave morin, and continually added to throughout the run of the residency by other members of the exhibition team, as well as local visitors... it got to be pretty dense, and represented the playful spirit of the residency.

( Try phoning the number if you'd care to say hello to Mr. Sunderji — tell him Carousel sent you! )

: : : : (above, R) Shawn Kuruneru came to the gallery with a sketchbook, and the desire to try something directly on the wall. Here's what he came up with.
